Christmas — How To Create A Fun & Cherished Christmas!

Monday, September 28th, 2009

A great way to ensure your Christmas will be remembered with warm and cherished memories is to incorporate some rituals. Adding rituals to the festivities will create fun and magic moments that will not only live in your families memories forever but will be excitedly looked forward to each year. Rituals will bring your family closer together creating joy and happiness for all!

Here is a fun ritual you could incorporate into this coming Christmas. Add some Christmas bells to the dinner table and ring them just before the festive meal is ready, calling all to attend the dinner table. Long before Christmas in the old days, bells were once rung with the assumption that the noise would chase away evil spirits. Santa Claus has jingling bells that he uses accompanying his sleigh ride around the world each year. His bells are symbols; they are jingled to remind us of the birth of new beginnings and the death of ignorance (once referred to as the devil).

Ringing bells before the meal is eaten is a wonderful reminder to push away judgments, speak no ills, and come together with a sense of joy, positivity and acceptance for one another. Make the festive meal a time where you all come together and share a positively good time. A time where only supportive words are spoken, encouragement and acknowledgement of each other is heard. Ringing the bells will remind all to keep positive, bright and joyous!

So have some fun, get yourself some jingling Christmas bells and chase away any menacing spirits or thoughts before the festive meal. You can be creative with your jingling and get your children to enjoy a brisk stroll through the house or around the dinner table as they jingle the bells joyously to ensure no menacing mischief makers will be heard on the day! The children will love this fun activity and all will enjoy the friendly reminder of the bells if anyone starts to slip up on their good attitude throughout the day!

Another ritual you could incorporate is the ‘Mistletoe Game’. This is a very old Christmas game where it was once common place to have suspended Mistletoe hung in the main room. For this game everyone would assemble in a circle around the Mistletoe. The first player (a male) has to slide a slipper and aim so it will land under the Mistletoe. If he fails another takes their turn. If he succeeds, even more fun begins as there is a scramble in the direction of the lady towards which the slipper points. She must seize the slipper and get away before being caught!

Rituals offer the opportunity for family and friends to interact in a joyous and fun manner. So why not add a few rituals to your festive day to add some fun and create great memories of a truly joyous and happy day.

New Jersey State Fair and Sussex County Farm and Horse Show

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

The New Jersey State Fair Sussex County Farm and Horse Show is held annually for ten days during the beginning of August in interestingly the town of Augusta. It’s not known whether the organizers decided to hold the fair during this month each year because of the name of the town or not. The town and fair is in the rural northwestern part of New Jersey and you will find lots of agriculturally based activities to enjoy.

Besides Horse Shows there are 4-H exhibits of which the kids statewide are very proud. You’ll also find Honey Bee demonstrations held daily, which may or may not attract fairgoers. It depends on how you feel about bees in general. The Commerford Petting Zoo not only has local animals such as goats and ponies, but you’ll find more exotic Elephants and Camels and have a chance to ride on them. On the fairgrounds you’ll find a baby animal nursery that houses all of the newest additions that make an appearance while at the fair. The baby chicks are by far the biggest draw.

Live entertainment at the state fair comes in many forms. Wander around the fair and you just might find the Chainsaw Artist exhibit and have a chance to watch art come to life before your eyes. The pet show gives dog, cat and other domesticated pet owners a chance to show off their best friends. Lovers of the Polka should look for the annual Polish Night and Polka Contest and dance the evening away. If you had a chance to admire the Chainsaw Artist exhibit during the fair you can come place some bids on the work during the Chainsaw Sculpture Artist Auction on the last day of the fair.

Those who don’t mind paying a little extra can find nightly fun at the Outdoor Entertainment Area. This venue hosts fireworks, demolition derbies, pulls, balloon rides, and lots of other competitions.

When you visit the fair you can stay in one of the many different types of lodging available. There are hotels, local campgrounds, RV sites, and bed and breakfasts. Bring your own car and you’ll find that parking at the state fair is free.

3 Benefits Your Family Can Reap From Playing Together

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

What if I told you there was a technique you could use to bring your family closer together and teach your children important life skills? What if I told you it could be both fun and free?

The simple technique is setting up a regular family game night. It sounds too simple, too easy, but spending time every week or every month together as a family playing games can reap tremendous rewards for your family and especially your children. Your children will learn important social skills and academic skills, but you will all benefit from bonding together over board games or whatever your choice of activity.

Playing board games can teach children important social skills such as taking turns and how to be a good winner or loser. They also learn a lot about interpersonal communication as you talk and laugh together while you play the game.

Do not overlook the many academic benefits children can reap from playing games as well. Even young children learn simple skills such as counting, colors and shapes and as they grow older they learn sorting, matching, and reading skills from games. As children grow older then you can advance to more challenging games that require higher level thinking and reasoning skills.

Today’s family usually has a busy schedule that often sends each member bustling off in a different direction much of the week. There are not many occasions when a family actually sits down together for more than the few minutes it takes to eat a meal (and sometimes not even that long). Setting aside a dedicate game night will mean that your family will have a few hours where there are no outside distractions and you are simply focused on enjoying each other. Playing a game takes the pressure off so there is no need to force conversation, but you might be surprised what you learn about and from your children during this time. Even if a rousing game of “Sorry” or “Trouble” does not inspire confidences right away, it will surely give you time to simply enjoy being together and will lead to the type of memories that your children will carry with them throughout their lives. Once your children know that they will have this time with your undivided attention then this will likely become the time when they do test out important questions and confidences.

It is important to set out some important guidelines for this night. It would be great to set aside one night a week, but perhaps it is only possible to hold a game night every two weeks or once a month. The most important element is that you make an effort to be consistent so children can look forward to the night and can rely on it. Second, you must turn off the television (all the TVs in the house) and makes sure the answering machine is on. No answering the phone or door bell (except maybe to collect the pizza). This is family time and family should be the priority. Short of fire, death or dismemberment there is nothing that cannot wait until after your game(s) are done. You should set aside at least one hour when children are younger and two hours when they are older but do not make an announcement of the time to avoid clock watching. The actual games do not matter much as long as they are board or card games. Computer games will not achieve the same results so you should avoid those.

Regular family game nights can reap tremendous benefits. Your children will learn important social skills and academic skills and you will all benefit from bonding together over a fun, relaxing activity. Go ahead and give it a try. You have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.
